  1. Jim,
My heart history family wise is almost identical. Heart attack at 42 and bypass at 53. On my last visit to the VA the Doc wants me to lost 50-60 lbs. I told her I gave the horses, drinking, and wild women. Now she wants this………………………Is there no end?

  2. I’m outa breath just reading all this. The only time I exercise is when I climb the stairs to the computer room with a cigarette in one hand and a beer in the other to start another fight on Face Book.

  3. Happy Birthday Infantry…. Hope you make it thru the weekend…….. I also do my daily pushups, usually between one and two hundred. I must say it is usually one and that is only the downward portion. As you mentioned, I also still look like crap. That is why I removed all of the mirrors in the house.
I enlisted under the 2 year enlistment program with four of my buddys. All four of us came back alive. One took an AK round thru the top of his wrist which came out the palm of his hand. He was prone in a firefight and reached for more ammo off his backpack. Now that’s close. Once again, Happy Birthday to ya….

  4. I turn 67 this weekend. Which is historic. In my bloodline, no male in two centuries in this country has lived to 67. All died of heart attacks. Grandfather at 36 or so around 1930; My father and his brother both at 66; their other brother at 48; one cousin at 44 and another at 51. I’ll be the first to hit 6i7. All the women descended from the same grandparents are bulletproof. But us men are fragile, apparently.
I had heart surgery in 1997 (age 49). I was jogging, doing intervals and got chest pains. I like to say I had heart surgery instead of a heart attack. Five bypasses. Before and since I’ve tried to take care of myself; Still eat too much but exercise is doing its job. Believe it or not, I do 60 pushups at the gym every day followed by 45 minutes of cardio and a little bit of weight stuff. I still look like crap but I’m fit and planning on living a long time. Of course I quit smoking 40 years ago. And, I used to get a lot of Pall Malls from those SP packages while the rest of you were fighting over Marlboros and Kools (or was it Salem) as I remember.
As for volunteering, that’s funny. Bill Connell’s story is almost opposite of mine. I wanted to volunteer for the draft but I was too embarassed because my friends would make fun of me for doing it. So, you and your freinds were the ones with balls while we were the wimps. But it evened out. When I was in Echo Company as a 90mm guy, the first Sgt. made me company clerk after i was there about a month or two. I couldn’t stand it. or him I wanted to go back to the field and I let him know it. I went back and eventually wound up permanently assigned to Charlie company (Vanderbosche and I volunteered for that; the other 90mm guys stayed in Echo and went out with whoever asked for them).
Now I drive a school bus. I never volunteer for anything there though!
So, that’s my bragging for today. 67 here I come.

  5. Bill,
Remind me not to take advice from you as you might drag me into a “real” miss. The only thing I ever volunteered for was to buy the next round. The lottery came out after I went. No number for me other than Uncle Sam wanted me. I love the Army commercials now when they asked if you can qualify for the team. When I went in the only qualification was to be breathing.

  6. By the way……If I waited few months, I would have got out of it because they had the draft lottery and my number turned out too high!……..I have no regrets now…..everything always seem to work out for the best.

  7. I turned 64 in September…..I volunteered for the draft when I was 18……I was drinking with my childhood friends and we were talking about the Nam……One of them said I did not have the balls to go to Vietnam……I sure showed him……Oy veh, the stupidity of youth!

  8. Dallas had plenty of opportunities to put that game away and couldn’t do it. That bogus call on the goal line is not what caused them to lose. The truth is that if you want to beat Aaron Rogers at home, you’d better be at least 3 touchdowns ahead by the 4th quarter.
Both teams played a great game. They left nothing on the field. It’s unfortunate that somebody had to lose.
    Now…on to Seattle. GO PACK!

  9. Alright guys let me pop the cherry now that the web site is back up. Just watched a miracle victory by Green Bay over Dallas. On to Seattle where the real challenge begins. The temp here today actually got above freezing for the first time in a long time. Hope all you are doing well and stay healthy.

  10. Hey guys did you notice that if you google Charlie grunts that sites for Flickr photo stream pop up with all our photos from the web site? Keep warm if you live in the cold areas like me Bill Porath and Tom Scanlon.

  11. Nice storyi about Chuck and the secreted donation. He called me to say hi a few days ago. Never knew he was so warm and fuzzy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. I started to south Texas today, but we had to turn around before we got out of Oklahoma because of heavy snow and icy roads. About 20 months ago I bought a new Jeep that was the Freedom edition. This jeep was made with army green color and had a big army star on the hood and the interior had the army star on the seats. Anyway last year in April, Rex Allen and I took this jeep down to Phoenix, AZ to visit Chuck Missar and Jim Grose (Short round was in Ohio then). I haven’t driven this vehicle much since that trip. The jeep had a recall that I had to take it back to the dealership to have the work done. I opened the glove compartment and there was an envelope in there with Fury written on it. I opened it and it contained a short note from Chuck thanking me for the web site and what I have done. It also contained a very nice cash contribution for the web site costs. Thank you about 8 months late for the donation, Chuck.

  13. It is cold and snowy today in Colorado. I get to leave Saturday to go to Port Aransas, TX for awhile! I got my room booked at the hotel for the 2015 reunion in Bloomington, MN. Tom did a really good job negotiating on the price. The regular rates are $239 and he got a rate of $109 which includes a free breakfast for Charlie Company.
