  1. Chuck,
Your task seeing as though you decided not to “grace” us with your presence is to get ahold of Fred and Pancho and help out with the planning etc of the reunion as it is in your neighborhood. That’s an order!

  2. uhhhhhhh–deep in something starting with–SHI—-is more likely–you know–the stuff that comes fom the backside of a water buffalo.

  3. SR…. I’m deep in a covert opp as we speak. I’ll see you next year if not sooner.
Jimbo… Glad to see you are still alive….
Sorry I missed all you grunts this year. I’ll see yall at next years reunion.

  4. there is a rumor going around arizona that a certain C-2/1 guy from san antonio, who was NOT AT THE RECENT REUNION, has applied for rear echelon status. is this rumor also heard in any other states ? has any 1 verified this ?
add another set of congrats to fred and alice for a job well done–s.r.

  5. Jim Grose it was good to see you post. I think we had around 50 at the reunion. I will be posting photos and other things to the web site probably next week.
They decided to have a reunion every year from now on. The dates have not been selected, but Bill Young is going to host next year’s reunion near Fort Hood, TX. Doc Whitebird will host the 2012 reunion in the black hills of South Dakota. As soon as I am informed of a date and the details, I will post them to this site.

  6. Hey Larry Harper…..I was looking at your photos on the website…there is one photo of the second squad identified as late 1969 where you are sitting behind Robert. Not sure, but I believe I am the unidentified big guy sitting between you and fast Eddie. Chuck Missar and a couple of other guys are also in the picture…..I got to to Charlie Company around 1/14/70. … Hope you guys had alot of fun at the reunion. I will try to make the next one.

  7. Jim Intravia, good to hear from you. About two months ago I posted about going to a local wedding and running into Mrs Hal Zehr. She told me about the 90 MM reunion. Small world.

  8. Hey all…How was the reunion? Sorry I missed it. Is there a roster of attendees? Pics to post?? Where/when is the next one?

  9. Louise and I had such a great time in Wabasha. What a beautiful part of our great country.A huge thank you to the Passe’s and their great kids. Looking forward to the future reunions, the stories and the passion and caring for eachother is truly phenomenal. Thanks to all.

  10. We had a great time at the reunion in Wabasha and liked the food at the local restaurants especially liked the clam chowder at Slipperys. That was the first time I had a fish boil like the one on Saturday night with shrimp and andulie and I will try to make it some time. I found out that LT Finelli was the 3rd platoon leader after Hampton Metts probably June to December 1968. Big thanks to our hosts and everyone that worked so hard so we all could have good time.

  11. Sorry I haven’t been around here for, jeez, about a year I guess. No real good excuse. Just distracted by day to day stuff, some good (like grandchildren who I babysit) and work but mostly no excuse. a little to add on Hawk hill “history.” I was in Echo company when I first got to Baldy (aug. 69) and we moved to HH soon after. The day before I got there, riding “shotgun” on a convoy Hawk Hill got hit by Sappers. I think it was occupied by mortar guys. I don’t know for sure if there was aline company there at the time. I don’t remember if there were any KIA, but I guess there had to have been. What was very memorable was that our guys had killed all the sappers, about 15 of them and piled them at the main gate. Stunk like hell and probably would have gotten them in trouble today, but I guess it sent a message.
The engineers started pretty quickly designing those big semi-underground bunkers that us Echo guys di all the heavy lifting to assemble. And I d o mean heavy lifting; 12/12 and 4/12 lumber and then hundreds of sandbags for each one. When all finished they were pretty luxurious and as a 90mm guy we had a 90 bunker and plenty of Charlie guys drank beer with us in there when we came back in from the field together. Us 90 guys had it pretty good. We went to the field but had some of the comforts of REMFdom without ever being called a remf.
All the 90mm guys who have found each other (about 8 of us) and a few mortar guys had a mini-reunion in May in Wash. DC.
good talking to you guys. I’ll try to hang around a bit more.
    “Infantry”

    1. Jim, Interesting to read your post-as I was on Hawk Hill (D2./1) filling sandbags for bunkers in early Aug. 69. You may remember a friend of mine from E 2/1 at the same time (mortars – I think) named Jim Ottaway- Flushing, Michigan-Who, sorry to say, has passed away. Thanks for your service

  12. Russ, Rex and I left at 4:30AM. The next time I go to a reunion I’ll make sure that I don’t have to leave so early.

  13. We ran out of beer about 1:30 AM Sunday morning. A couple guys went to Slipperys for more, the owner gave us the beer, so thanks to Slipperys (the bar in Grumpy Old Men) for extending the party until sun-up.

  14. I want to thank Fred and Alice Passe for doing a great job hosting the reunion. Also thanks to Fred and his brother Ed for taking some of us guys fishing. Another thank you to Fred’s four sons for the cooking the great meal on Saturday night. I know there was more of Fred’s family involved in all the desserts etc, so thank you also.
And last but never the least a big thank you to Colonel Nerone, whom sent me money to buy beer for everyone. The first night I spent about half of what he sent, but people kept bringing more drinks and we got thru the night on half the funds. On Saturday everyone was thirsty and the carryover from Friday night was gone soon. The second half of the money bought enough to last until I went to the rack. The night owls probably had to furnish buying their night cap. Thanks, Si!
Ed Davis, Rex Allen, Ben Buehler, Wally Searight, and myself had a great time during our week stay in Wabasha, MN.

  15. Wally, did you and Rex get your 4AM start back.? I didn’t quite last til 4, but the festivities were still going……kinda like an old Chu Lai stand down…. Too bad we couldn’t catch deuce-and-a-half rides home.
Glad I made it up there for one night to see you all again. And of course a big thanks to Fred and family for everything. This new one will be back and I also hope we can get more new ones out next time.

  16. Made it home safe and sound. What a good week ! It was great seeing all the familar faces and the new ones I haven’t seen in 40 years. Hope to see more new ones at the next reunion. Does South Dakota have any good fishing holesw?

  17. lt i remember being told that they were good for 60 yrs—after consuming some –they tasted like they had already been sitting for 50. sounds like the reunion was a big success

  18. Sweet Jesus Larry you don’t think they were edible do you? Some of the cans had a little rounded cap on them. Fred’s wife Alice did feed us peaches and pound cake for dessert though.

  19. Thank you to Fred and Alice for the wonderful time we had at the Wabasha Reunion! The small community you live in is beautiful and the people are extremely nice. We took the Wisconsin side of the river on the way home and enjoyed it. It will probably take a few weeks for all of that wonderful beer to clear through the system. I plan on trying to make Fred Chin’s next year near Ft. Hood and for sure the one in SD if I am still able. We love all of you guys!

  20. Hi guys, I got back last night and I am recovering from all that driving. I enjoyed the
reunion and I will try and have a good one just like the Passes in two years. Remember
2012 in the Black Hills someplace. Rapid City has an airport. I hope you express your date preference as I will have to work with the tourism group in the Black Hills. Some of the attractions are Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Devil’s tower and gambling in Deadwood.
There are a lot of other attractions so you guys should have some full days. Glad to see all you grunts at the reunion and I hope you guys are safe and getting tucked away in your nests.
    Doc Whitebird

  21. Just got home and unpacked – safe trip. The Passes were great hosts. Many thanks for a great and memorable time.
Sit-rep of a safe return home from each of the 40-50 that were there would be appreciated.

  22. All charliegrunts- I just got back and want to say how much I enjoyed seeing and talking to all of you brothers- I tried to thank our hosts entire family- they were great and graious- I enjoy you all and look forward to next time!

  23. Short Round, I must admit the Marines did seem to leave a lot of abandoned equipment lying around. I don’t know if that was a mindset left over from WWII or Korea or they just lost a lot of stuff during those big fights or if they were careless about things. I think they threw a lot of M-16s away at first because they were so unreliable. My book says they had an experimental version that didn’t work worth a damn in “66-“67 We also found a variety of other gear. I found a flak jacket buried under my hootch on a hogback in Antenna Valley. We seemed so picky about everything from C-Rats to Hand Lumes that I always thought the grenades and M-79 rounds they used against us must have come from somewhere else.
