  1. Bill:
I figure a week to 10 days ought to be enough. A day over, a day up to I Corps and the same thing getting back. That’s 4 days right there, so that would leave 3-5 days to see what we want to see. But, it wouldn’t hurt to take more.

    1. Gary, you might want to look on the internet at vietnam veterans tours. Some of them are run by vets, and it would be easier to customize a tour than try fumbling around our old AO. I’m sure things have changed since we were there. If you find a good deal that fits the needs,I’d like to join you. Tooch

  2. GARY,
I might be interested. How long would you plan to be gone. Less than a year I hope. My contact information is on the roster.

  3. I’ve been doing a little internet research and am just curious about something.
I can fly from Dallas to Los Angeles on Southwest, Los Angeles to Taipae on China Airlines and Taipae to Ho Chi Minh City on Vietnam Air, round trip, for less than $1300 in early April, after the northern monsoon’s are over.
Assuming that a passport and visa wouldn’t be a problem, anybody interested in going back to our old AO? From the comments of other traveler’s who’ve been to modern-day Vietnam, moving around the country is virtually unrestricted and there are some pretty nice hotels in Danang and Hoi An, plus the train runs from HCMC to Danang for about $40. There are cars or motorcycles to rent or guided tours to what you want to see for more than a reasonable rate.

  4. The other guy in my roster photo is Eduardo Martinez-Torres (Pancho). He was a co-host of the recent Kileen reunion. The photo was taken by Gill while on stand down at Hawk Hill around early February 1970.

  5. Larry,
Trying to find my photographs since I moved. When I do I will scan them and get them to you. The one you chose is fine, Once ugly, always ugly. Good hunting.

  6. My 35th annual pheasant hunt and get together is next week end. What I am proudest of is that three of my grunt brothers are coming. I pick up Rex Allen tomorrow in Colorado Springs and he is staying until the 16th. Wally Searight and his son in law Terry Moore are arriving on Tuesday and get to stay a week. Then Ben Buehler will be in Friday. I also invited Clay Sniff to drive down about 70 miles to join us; I hope he can make it this year. I am really looking forward to this!
Bill: That photo is about the only one I have that shows you up close. You need to get your photos to me so I can post them to the website. Speaking of the web site, my next project is to get the slide show on the photos going again. There’s always something to do. I also need to update the KIA and taps section.

  7. Just had a 5.2 earthquake here in North Texas. It was epicentered about 150 miles away up in Oklahoma. Never felt one here before.

  8. Larry,
I just got back into town and check the roster. I thought I looked more like Paul Newman in those days. Oh well those were the days.

  9. Capshaw, why you’re still a spring chicken………in your mind. You been to the Clinton library lately and if so, what floor did you visit?

  10. Today is November 4th. 42 years ago today, I was voluntarily inducted into the United States Army in Oklahoma City.
Good Lord! That’s a LONG time ago, ain’t it? 🙂

  11. I have finished updating the addresses and contact information for the roster. If you find your information is incorrect, please let me know. I am in the process of linking photos to the roster section. If you find that I have the wrong photo for you or you don’t like the one that I selected for you, please let me know. I threw in one surprise to see if anyone is paying attention.
Thanks Brandon for getting the web site where it again shows the mailing addresses of everyone.

  12. Bill
Glad you got all the snow at your end of the state. We didn’t get any, and I hope it
    stays that way.

  13. Bill,
I have heard tell that the Lord works in strange ways but so does Bill Beckum to move from warm sunny Florida to Pennsylvania and a record snow fall. Dom you remember how to use a shovel? Maybe Walt Searight could give you lessons!

  14. Leave it to me to move from FL to PA where we set a record snow fall for OCT of about 6 inches at our house.

  15. have had the ringing in the ears noise for years here. sometimes a bit louder, sometimes just usual ringing . on very rare-and short –occasions–it stops–which always surprises me.
am back in AZ for the winter.
larry–congrats to brandon and the family

  16. Congratulations to Dad, Brandon and Grandpa Larry and best wishes for a happy life for Baby Lillian Eve……Brandon, the only way to avoid the diaper changing is to work a lot of overtime.

  17. My son, Brandon that set up this web site and attended the St. Louis reunion had a daughter last week. Lillian Eve Harper and mother Lindsey are doing just great! Of course she is very beautiful!
I am going to do a lot of needed maintenance to this web site next week. If you have any changes to your contact information, let me know (larryharper(at)centurytel.net.

  18. Just rolled back into Texas from Le Claire. Once again, it was a special experience. If y’all have never been to a reunion, you don’t really know what you’re missing. It was really neat to meet some of the guys from earlier times! No matter the time frame or the AO, we’re all the same and all family.

  19. Lori and I had a great time in LeClaire. We felt very welcomed, everyone was so nice to us. We decided at the last minute to take the 3 hour ride from Chicago to Iowa and we lucked out finding a room at the hotel. I always feel comfortable when I’m with the goys from the 196th. We look forward to seeing you all again.

    1. Dan, I sent you an E-mail off your roster address about when and where we will be at Ft De Soto. Did not go through. Send me a commo check off my address on the roster.

  20. Forgot to mention it brought chills to my spine to hear the sounds of the helicopters in the background, artillery, and mortars in the back grounds. I have ten tapes my family saved and have listen to five so far. The first five tapes are from LZ Ryder and LZ Ross from 12/68 to 3/69. Got some names of guys in my squad in 2nd Platoon third squad who I hope to track down who are not on the current roster and I had forgotten but hearing their voices brought back the memories.

  21. Been listening to tapes from the early part of my tour. Had not heard them in 43 years. How many of you remember the terms DL and NL. I had forgotten them. Day Logger and Night Logger.
Sorry to have missed the gathering. Hope to make future ones.

  22. Got home late last night, felt natural, raining in Seattle! Imagine that. Great time with LT and Tai, Hooking up with the Rozniak,s in Chicago. What agreat bunch of guys at LeClaire! They and their wives made every effort to make us feel at home with them. Nice to put a face with a name. Proud to have met them and hope to do it again. Brothers forever.
