  1. Well,
Here we go for another 4 years of gridlock! Stock market dropped like a rock today I suppose because of the outcome!

  5. Hey Gary and Tressa,

All you eastcoasters our prayers are with you!!

  6. Larry…Albany NY is about 135 miles from Manhattan….As you must have heard by now, they really got clobbered down there…..We had warnings in Albany, but just had a little rain and some high wind…no big deal.

  7. Bill:
Are you all buckled down for hurricane Sandy?
Doc Capone’s comment on being in a safe place was just too good not to share. He said “Resupply adult beverages. We may loose power but after 1600 hours it may subside. Choppers are grounded, ground assault!

  8. Bill, the whiskey was before my time in country, but I got a slug of that Coors…Thanks for sharing it, Larry.

  9. Bill C,
My Dad sent me a pint of whiskey in a hollowed out loaf of bread. Shared it with the squad. Gone in 5 minutes.

  10. Hey Bill Beckum…My father also sent me a big Bowie knife but I opened the package in Chu Lai hospital just before i got medevacked to Japan……I gave it to another guy who was getting sent back to the field…Some people got some unusual mail…..I remember one guy in our outfit got a six-pack of Coors and a .38 revolver….Hey Short Round…Bayonets at Kham Duck!……Talking about bringing knives to a gunfight!….I bet you would have preferred a couple of boxes of hand grenades and some .45 pistols…..But those REMF officers had all the .45s. Everyone on the east coast be careful of the storm.

    1. I was the one that got the six pack of Coors as one of my Colorado buddies sent it to me. Larry Foster got the 38.

  11. Short Round,
I figured if they ever got that close I would be dead or swinging my weapon like at the Alamo.

  12. Terry,
I carried an M-79 when I first got there. If you remember they had a shell that was like a big shot gun shell. I had two. They were for close quarters. I walked point with one in the chamber. Never thought to borrow an M-16. No one offered and I was to green to think of it. Never shot any of those rounds.

  13. HHC issued me a bayonet along with my rifle and seven magazines. I carried it around on my ruck the whole time. A fat lot of good it would do me there. The only time I remember trying to put it on my rifle was after I taped the handle back on the bayonet. It had broken during a contest to see who was best at throwing and sticking the thing in a big timber on the side of a bunker. I had made it too thick and it wouldn’t go on the end of my rifle. When I turned it back in at the end of my tour the supply sergeant didn’t say a thing about it.

  14. Hey Terry,
At least with a bayonet on an M16 you could shoot the bastard while stabbing him but their would be a slight problem with the Thump gun not arming until 28 feet but I imagine at close range I guess it would leave quite a hole. I don’t believe we ever carried bayonets as they probably thought we would lose them. Getting ready for our VFW Buddy Poppy day coming up and unfortunately I am charge in coordinating the volunteers and it is worse than leading an Infantry Platoon.

  15. Bill C.
I believe it was optional. I never carried one. I did have a hunting knife my Dad sent me on my request.

  16. Hi guys….Did we carry bayonets in the Nam?….I can’t remember…..I know we used them in Basic and AIT…..I remember a lot of us had machetes to cut thru the jungle, but for some reason I can’t remember bayonets.

  17. Tooch,
When I got back from R&R I heard two had been killed by the booby trip. I assume Leo Pierce was the other. Do not be bothered as we know that when something like that happens there is a lot going on. I saw Allen Bernstein being carried to the chopper but did hear he died later which makes since by the date of his death.
As for as walking point or one or two back I figured it was going to be history for us if anything happen. Tooch, glad you mad it as I am sure you and your family are.

  18. My apology for #9. I have no idea how a smiley face got there. Hit a wrong button somewhere. Sorry guys. Forgive my error. These were all brave men.

    1. Bill , John North was my pointman. He tripped a booby trap and was killed instantly. I was also hit and was dusted off. I never saw his body ,and was not able to say goodbye. That is something that has always bothered me. John was only 18. What a waste.Tooch

  19. Since we have been talking about the wall I decided to look at those who were lost during my tour. All these years I really thought it was 6 but after reviewing the list it was 11. I decided my number was off because often I did not hear of the guys who died later after being dusted off. One happened about a week before I jointed the company while getting my refresher course in Chu Lai. Two happened while I was in Hawaii on R&R. I will look them all up when we visit the wall in 2013.
