  1. Grunts were perceived by the REMF, maybe double MF at the bottom of the food chain. I remember one time when we were back on bunker line duty that we had to pull for the REMF’s, maybe double MF’s. We had to build a shower facility that was fairly close to the bunker line.
About 2 months later when we came back in to pull bunker duty for the REMF’s again, maybe double MF’s, we were looking for the first shower we had taken since the one we took after we built the shower. Well, the shower was locked and we could not use what we built. The first day the spike on our trenching tools opened the locks just fine. The next day they were more securely locked so the spike on the trenching tool no longer opened the doors. The REMF’s, maybe double MF’s got in some grunts faces and threatened them with court martial as this was an officer’s only shower. They forgot that grunts carried C-4 and det cord and wasn’t particularly fond of REMF’s, maybe double MF’s. After that night, the splinters left from the shower were not enough to attach the locks to. Grunts 1 REMF’s 0.

    1. There’s just nothing like mixing a high-stress environment, armed teenagers and explosives, is there? LOL 🙂
During my time there, we had some guys blow up a piss-tube one night for the helluva it and somebody gassed the NCO billets. Another time, a bunch of us got drunk and/or stoned and built a bonfire on Hawk Hill. I don’t remember why.
Eventually, such things resulted in them making us turn our weapons into the arms room when we came in from the bush. I think that started in early ’71.

  2. some of us went to Tampa, Fl. last weekend. was a nice reunion, put on by bob gleason,so we had a mix of 68 to 1970 mostly. no idea as yet if same will be done next year.
among topics was how grunts, as usual, were at the bottom of the food chain. even the rats kicked us out of their bunkers on the firebase, during monsoons.

  3. Larry…You would think it should be the other way around….Like the REMFs should be humble in the presence of infantry soldiers…..May our fallen brothers rest in peace.

  4. I remember them as the two medics (i was 20 feet away and it could have just as easily been Danny and me-we had just skipped over that spot to set up for the night).. I barely knew Danny and knew him only as Tennessee. That was a eally crappy week.

  5. Yesterday was the anniversary of the deaths of Kirkby and Berry and tomorrow is the anniversary of the death of Danny Roberts. RIP Brothers!

  6. LT, Larry…The wife and I will probably stay at the Embassy Suites Hotel unless we come up with a better solution. She is not a smoker and I have been cutting down but I just don’t like the idea of it being forbidden….They get your credit card number and charge you a fortune if they detect smoke! Gary.. hope you can make it because you sure seem to know your way around DC. I don’t think I’m interested in the fancy dinner and dancing either, but would definitrly like to get together for a few belts and a couple of brewskies.

    1. Bill:
I am glad you mentioned about not going to the fancy dinner as I already had my check made out but not mailed. The last 196th reunion Ed Davis, Dennis Silva, and I went to we did not enjoy the dinner and dance at all. Too damm many REMF’s that think they did all the fighting and forgot they was there to support the grunts. Most of them still look down their noses at grunts!

  7. I got my reservations for the motel in DC and my plane reservations today.
I tried to get room reservations for the Colorado reunion, but you have to call the sales office during regular business hours to get the group rate. I will call Monday.

  8. By the way, SSG Leo “Pops” Rose, KIA 1-11-71 is in Arlington. I wonder how many other Charlie Company guys are? There’s a locator office in the visitor center which can look up names and provide a map to the gravesite, and I think they may be cross-referenced by unit.

  9. Larry: Take the Metro from your hotel to the Arlington Cemetery station and you’re there. The trams are the way to see the cemetery and you can buy the tickets right there in the visitor center. If you’re up to about a 1/2 mile walk, you can walk out the front door of the visitor center, right across the Potomac River bridge and around to the front of the Lincoln Memorial. The Wall is just over there on the left, behind some trees.
I’ll try to come to this one too, but I think I’ll stay where Bill is staying and smoke my head off.

  10. Larry,
Found out my son’s wedding has been called off. If stays that way I will be there Fri & Sat. night for the D.C. reunion. Will to wait until closer to the date as they may kiss & make up.

  11. I am going to try an make both reunions this year. Who all is going to which and when are you going to arrive. If going to the DC reunion, what tours are you planning on taking? I would really like to the Arlington National Cemetery tour. I am shocked they don’t have a tour to the Wall unless the Saturday memorial service is at the Wall.

  12. The Embassy Suites Hotel in Crystal City is about a mile away from the Hyatt on the same road. They have smoking rooms for about the same price as the Hyatt.

  13. Bill:
ps: Let the smoke-Nazi’s stand outside while we lay up in bed, watch TV, drink beer, smoke a cigarette and take life easy.

  14. Bill: Try this website. It lists 11 hotels in Alexandria which have smoking rooms. The first one on the list is in OldTown, about 2 stops east of Crystal City on the Metro. I’ve stayed in Old Town before and it’s a much more interesting neighborhood than Crystal City. Old Town has about 10 or 12 blocks of restaurants, junk shops, antique galleries and such, all the way down to the waterfront. And, there’s a pretty good VFW post a block east of the main drag, King St, about half way to the river from the Metro station. I highly recommend Old Town as a pleasant alternative.

  15. Bill,
Thank goodness I believe the vast majority of our bunch don’t smoke otherwise there is always the vast outdoors.

  16. Bill: Yes, I hadn’t thought of that. It WOULD cause a problem, wouldn’t it? LOL
On the bright side, a woman couldn’t HELP but be able to read a map better than CPT. Porky (you guys who were there know what I mean!). I’ve never been so lost in my life…and neither has anyone else. I mean..gee whiz…how hard is it to find a mountain in Vietnam?

  17. Guys,
The registration info for the 196 LIB reunion in DC is posted today on their website linked off our website to the right. Hope to see many of you there!

  18. We would have to take our orders through any woman in the company, just like all men do. That would put stress on the chain of command. Sorry Gary, I couldn’t resist.

  19. Don’t forget dog tags; renamed B…H tags. Heart shaped in a variety of colors and encrusted with bling.

  20. definately a different view of things//and of course two grunts to carry the wardrobe of each and every female g.i.

  21. High heeled designer boots [ tan with pink shoelaces] , animal print fatigues , ammo pouches bras , platoon hair stylist , trigger finger nail protector, and most important , those little white missles called “TAMBOMBS”; just light the little white fuse and throw.
