  1. While I’m regurgitating history, I just read a book titled “Road of 10,000 Pains” about the Marines operations against the 2nd NVA Division in 1967–Specifically Operations Union I & II. The road referred to is Rt 534 which left Hwy 1 a few clicks S of Hawk Hill and ran SW to S of Hiep Duc roughly paralleling Rt 535 which ran from Baldy to Ross to Hiep Duc. The marines lost more KIA on these ops than any other ops anybody ran during the war. The huge fights were in the heart of our old AO and occurred around Hiep Duc, Que Son, Nui Loc Son and what became Ross. I’m personally grateful to the Marines for taking out so many seriously bad NVA. Otherwise we would have got stuck with the detail.

  2. Wabasha is great! Did some sightseeing, fishing, eating and emptying cans. Seems that Coors Light are the easiest cans to empty. Fred and Alice Passe are super hosts.

  4. I hope that you have a great time at the reunion. I wish I could be there, but our schedule here just won’t allow it.
We just found out that a member of the Brigade here in Vicenza, Italy will be presented with the Medal of Honor.
He is the 1st living recipient of either the Iraq or the Afghan wars.

    1. thnx for the info hoping u all have a safe and interesting get together maybe catch next one—have a brewski 4 me ok larry fry

  5. Re: Hawk Hill started out as a bald knob called Hill 29 used by 2/11 ACR while they were part of Task Force Oregon. They were relieved by our very own 1/1 Cav who also called it Hill 29 and named it Black Hawk Hill. They did most of the initial building of bunkers etc until it was expanded when the 196th made it their HQ in 1969. Many of our Charlie Grunts helped w/ the expansion. 1/1 Cav used Black Hawk as part of their logo due to their role in the Black Hawk War in the upper Midwest in the 1830’s. The name got shorted to Hawk Hill later on. The 1/1 Cav (1st Regiment of Dragoons) served w/ the Americal Div and w/ the 196th LIB from 1967-1972 but they were actually part of the 1st Armored Division. Enjoy the reunion guys.

  6. larry—your being a 2nd platoon guy, and didn`t know fred as well as some of us,keep an eye on fred when you go out to eat. he was known to snatch some nuc mahm from mama sahns hootch on occasion. check his pockets for silverware before you leave.

  7. Larry,
Tai said to tell the Big Teddy Bear she would love some walleyed Pike even if she had to clean them. Hope fishing is good and the beer is cold! See you guys in a few.

  8. The brigade’s colors are up in Wabasha. Fred & Alice Passe, Judy and I will be going out to eat soon. Fred wanted to remind everyone that it may get a little cool so bring some warm clothes. Tomorrow, Ed Davis, Ben Buehler, Wally Searight, and Rex Allen will arrive.

  9. Steve,
Sorry for your loss. Lets take it easy on ministers as they are human like we are all. Everyone have a great time. Hope to see you at the next one.

  11. Guys,
I looked up the book you guys are talking about. It is called Rattler One-Seven by Chuck Gross and is available on Amazon.com! You’re welcome!

  12. lt–yes–jan and i will be in wabasha. good to see you got chuck to wake up and pay attention–old grunts can be difficult at times.
steve hom–see you next time around—be well there.
ben–i`ll have to try and remember that rattler 17 book when i get back to az. maybe chuck can remind me.
jim arm–that`s what i was referring to–giving us 2/1 guys a bad name.

  13. Hey Chuck,
Thanks for the 1 foot correction on the elevation of HH. I don’t guess one foot really mattered as it wasn’t nothing but a slight rise in the ground.
SR: You and Jan going to be in Wabasha?

  14. I just put together SR’s mention of B 2/1 with the killing for trophies story coming out of Afghanistan, hoping there was no connection.
Alas, the Semper Primus badge on the caps of the soldiers charged is plain to see.
Somehow the excuse “We did it in Iraq” only makes it clearer how unlikely it is that we will ever accomplish our stated goals in that part of the world.
I am not sure what an Afghan tribesman will think about burning Korans in Florida, but I can guess how long it will be before he forgets and forgives the murder and dismemberment of one of his family.

  15. Hello everyone. I know it’s been quite awhile since I posted anything, but I’ve been unbelievably busy. I wasn’t able to get to my computer for 3 weeks, and I had almost 600 messages to wade through. As you may know, my wife’s mother had terminal brain cancer and was staying with us. She died last month. My wife’s brother was supposed to be the executor of the estate, however, he dumped all of that onto my wife, so she’s been having a hard time getting things sorted out. Things still aren’t settled, but the greedy SOB is only concerned with how much money he’s getting, and how soon can he get it. Did I mention he’s a minister? With all this upheaval going on, there’s just no way that Reg and I will be able to make this year’s Reunion. We’d like to, but it just isn’t going to happen. I hope you all have a great time there, and we’ll try and get to the next Reunion. Steve Homoki.

  16. Another book is “Rattler 17”. I think his tour started May 1970. Haven’t read it yet – still looking for a copy.

  18. Chuck Missar our resident statistician says HH is Hill 34. Good thing we didn’t have a sunami or we all would have drowned!
