  1. Doc Ulin was with us in 1st platoon, as I recall. I’m guessing some time in the first half of 70… I could never remember his name until seeing it now.

  2. Thanksgiving 1969: I was an FNG – I did have my CIB and saw some guys hurt, but the only bodies I had seen were VN. When I was told about the wonderful meal we were promised for Thanksgiving, I thought it was a joke at first. Then the weather closed in and we didn’t think we would get that dinner. Luck was with us and our meal was delivered by the tracks.
In less than a week my platoon suffered mass casualties and death and the first time I had to take leadership. That changed the way I look at Thanksgiving forever. I am sincerely thankful for my blessings and only my comdrades here truly understand the extent of that. Happy Thanksgiving to all and thanks for the therapy.

  3. Scott, good to hear from you. We made contact four years ago by E-mail through the 196 website. Sent an E-mail about Tim Ulin again a while back – hope you find him. Made contact with Doss Kornegay (Recon PL) a few years ago and have met up with him a couple times. Wonderful guy and I feel it would have been an honor serving under him. Darrell Chancellor (next Recon PL) was our 2nd PL. Darrell came into the company just a few days after I left the field. We are all hoping Darrell makes it to a reunion.
My interest stems from the incident of the HH artillery firing on you in June,70. Doss can clue you in “and that is all I have to say about that”.

  4. Great to find this site. I was medic with recon 2/1, 5/70-12/70. Ran into Tim Ulin, C Co medic a couple of years ago. Trying to relocate him so I can show him this site. He now lives up in Kingston, WA. Hope to see some of you next summer at 196th Reunion in Seattle. If anyone wants I can organize an ocean salmon fishing trip.

  5. Thanksgiving, 1970. I was on KP at the Combat Center in Chu Lai.
At least I can brag that I’ve done KP on three continents!

    1. thanks for the memory thanksgiving ’70 we were tired of eating out of cans[c-rats] seems like we turned into this opening and there was this mass offering of HOT meals

  6. Thanksgiving Day 1969 I had been home about a week and half for my first Thanksgiving with family after Nam. I had much to be thankful for!

  7. Hope everybody had a nice day yesterday. Short Round, on Thanksgiving of 1969, I was still at AIT in Fort Polk. I got to Charlie Co. about Jan 15 1970. I hope you guys enjoy the tasty leftovers. There’s nothing like pumpkin pie with whipped cream for a late breakfast.

  8. dang–i must be losing it a tad–that was K.P. with terry, not bill ? terry, you were with the 82nd also ? my redeeming thought is, being a regular grunt, my math tells me 41 yrs ago was 1969. lt sheperd, being an officer , thinks it was 42 yrs ago.

  9. 42 years ago 4 of us were wounded day after thanksgiving when one trip a bobby trap just as we walk up on top of hill. lt shepherd, marty plt sgt, ,my medic and my rto were also wounded at that time . the next day i think cpt smith was killed by another boby trap on next hill. suprised how vivid it still is

  10. I was in A 3/21 in January 1968, I am wondering about the location of your company on the night of January 5, we arrived on the scene the following morning.

  11. Forty-one years ago today I did KP With Short Round amongst others so lucky, but no complaints here. I am a thankful man these days with family, good friends and a brotherhood many could never have nor understand. Thank you all, Happy Thanksgiving and God Bless America!

  12. Hi Guys,
Just got back a while ago from standing in the cold and dampness waiting with the Patriot Guard to welcome a young Grayslake Marine home for Thanksgiving with his family. It was real nice to be able to participate and tell him welcome home! This one was a good one as he was alive and kicking. God bless you all! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day!

  13. i`ve noticed that my phone did not get a hello call from chuck or larry recently, but that`s ok, i`ll still wish them and all the grunts that show up here, a happy turkey day. it`s now 41 years since bill connell and i shared a T-day meal together, in a nice dry building.

  14. An elderly man in Phoenix calls his son in New York and says, “I hate to ruin your day, but I have to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing; forty-five years of misery is enough.”
“Pop, what are you talking about?” the son screams.
“We can’t stand the sight of each other any longer,” the old man says. “We’re sick of each other, and I’m sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in Chicago and tell her,” and he hangs up.
Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. “Like hell they’re getting divorced,” she shouts, “I’ll take care of this.” She calls Phoenix immediately, and screams at the old man, “You are NOT getting divorced. Don’t do a single thing until I get there. I’m calling my brother back, and we’ll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don’t do a thing, DO YOU HEAR ME?” and hangs up.
The old man hangs up his phone, too, and turns to his wife. “Okay,” he says, “they’re coming for Thanksgiving………….Happy Turkey Day!

  15. Hey Larry, where did you find those two? Also need to get the password for the roster. Take care and have a Happy Thanksgiving…Turkey loaf?

  16. I got together with Doc Capone and Charles Missar yesterday. We hoisted a few and went out for supper. Charles and Suzzane invited us to stay the night and we did so. We had a great time! Thanks, Doc and Charles.

  17. Thank you for the response, Rick. Haven’t been able to find it anywhere to listen to – was beginning to think it may have been another “???????”. Glad to find it to be reality.
I think the album request will be in my letter to Santa.

  18. There has been a song from the 60’s going through my head that I cannot find anywhere. I think it was called “Down in the Jungle” and I think it was sung by Glenn Yarborough, anyway it went like this – Down in the jungle, where it all began. Monkey started thinking, thought he’d be a man. Man built a mud hut, woman gave a grin, then all her relation started moving in. It goes on to where the neighbors envy and then comes violence and ends abruptly with “Down in the jungle where it all began”. I figured it was a war protest song. Does anyone remember this and can help me find it?

  19. I received an email as follows that some of you might help me on: Message:
Hello, my name is Sam and my Father (Angel C. Velez Jr) served with the 2/1 196th LIB from 1967-1968 in Vietnam. He always had stories about Chu Lai, LZ Baldy and a few others to name a few. Trying to locate anyone that may have served with him. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks you,
    Sam

  20. Brandon,
Thank you! We appreciate all your hard work in getting the orginal site and this one designed and running. It is evident you got your good looks and brains after your Mom.

  21. Just thought I’d post a quick note to say I missed a step when I setup this “new” website and apparently none of the messages for the contact form have been getting through to the right place. Not to worry, they are all saved and I’ve forwarded them all on, but if you used the contact form and nobody got back to you, that’s why. There is certainly a backlog of them, so be patient. Sorry about that everyone.

  22. There’s about a dozen guys that I went to high school with that are vets and we’re about half Army and half Jarheard clan. The Jarheads organize a dinner every year for all of us and like to think of it as celebration of the Marine Corps. birthday….which is Nov 10….haha. It always makes for a pretty lively evening. All good, but not quite as lively as a Charlie Co. evening..
Happy Vets Day, and the Best to you All.
