  1. Doof: It was great to meet you and Don for the first time and I really hope y’all can come next year to Colorado.

  2. Doof says
Thanks again Ching and Jeannie for bringing the Sister Bay reunion a reality. I had a great time and felt so welcome. My brothers and their wives made this reunion one that I will never forget. For all you other 2/1 vets out there, come join us at the next reunion, you will not be disappointed.
Thanks LT and good luck with your surgery.

  3. Sister Bay was was just SOOOO relaxing. We didn’t do much more than sit around and bullshit, but it sure was fun.
I’ll echo what LT said: Thanks Ching and Jeannie for finding that place.

    1. lt–prayers on the surgery//and recovery///wishing all a safe and heart felt Memoral day ///if things change –for the better –i’d like to try and attend the reunion in Rapid City///my Dad is there//// R.I.P. TO ALL OUR FALLEN BRETHERN..

  4. Hey guys!
Just got back from Sister Bay, WI from the reunion with the 70/71 bunch. We had a great time and Ching Lau is to be thanked for setting it up. Ben and Marilyn were there as well as Gary and Tressa Evans. Don Hooper was there from Jacksonville FL and I am ashamed to say he was in my platoon but I didn’t remember him(he came up from then Big Red One) and also in attendance from my platoon was Bill Porath(Doof). He said he had a great time and is seriously considering Rapid City. I am going to be undergoing gall bladder surgery in about 3 weeks so keep me in your thoughts. I love you all Brothers!

  5. You know S R that those who suggest such outlandish ideas are the first recquired to demonstrate long forgotten procedures! Saddle Up!

  6. to larry harper–me being a typical grunt of questionable character and mentality, i have a suggestion. those grunts that fail to participate in this discussion should be assessed a non use yearly or monthly fee. this can be voted on in this years reunions. those that vote no will be required to wear 60-to 70 pound rucks at the next reunions. other suggestions can be added to improve responses–s.r.

  7. Ben,
I am so glad to hear that you will be coming to Sister Bay. I am also sad that I won’t be able to make the Rimmer Scholarship presentation with you this year but I have a previous engagement involving a VFW picnic for the PTSD ward at the local VA center. I will send Larry the same donation I gave last year. See yah in Cheesehead land, Brother.

  8. I have noticed the long dry spell here also, but I have been waiting for responses for contributions to the Rimmer scholarship and from Doc Whitebird on South Dakota info. In the meantime I have made reservations for the Wisconsin Reunion – getting a late start but should arrive May 18 if all goes well. Also made reservations for South Dakota Reunion in September.

  9. 1 week since the last posted comment. just goes to show–were humping a ruck and texting a message back home a grunt requirement, many would still be back in the bush

  10. OK, Russ will be in Mt Morris with me, anyone else?
Once again I am asking for donations to bolster the scholarship account. Make checks payable to: Oregon School Foundation.
In the memo section, enter Ed Rimmer Scholarship
Or send your check to Larry Harper and he will forward the money as a lump sum from Charlie Grunts.

  11. Doc,
I have a chance to take a tour with my wife to Iceland which we plan to do. Sorry will miss the reunion. Wanted to see that part of America.

  12. I checked with the hotel and those who are coming to the reunion need to make their
reservations very soon. I also need to have a head count so I can plan different activities for those attending the reunion. Hope all is well with everyone.
    Doc

    1. Doc, can you recommend an RV park? You can count on 2 of us. We plan to arrive early and do some sightseeing and then move to the hotel for the reunion.

  13. Doc Rimmer Memorial Scholarship presentation will be May 15, 6:30 in Mt Morris, Illinois. Will anyone join in with me for this special presentation. Special this year as I visited the place where he was killed just last week. All the more important to have your support.

  14. I went on a trip to Washington and Oregon a week ago and visited some Nam Brothers. I first stopped by and saw Terry and Louise Roberts for a day. Terry accompanied me as we headed south and saw Roger Sample in Portland, Oregon. We then went on south and visited an Artillery guy that was attached to Charlie Company in Art Sprague. Art has been with the sheriff’s department for 38 years and is retiring on June, 30th. Art’s youngest son is now 14 years old!
Terry and I then went to Visit with Tate Hayes, whom I went to Basic training, AIT, flew to Nam on the same plane, and even went to Charlie Company on the same chopper. We ended up in the same platoon, 2nd of course, and served side by side until he got a REMF job with the ARVN’s at the end of April, 1969. He and Roger Sample went to the ARVN unit at the same time and Roger was in the same squad as Tate.
I then went and hooked up with David Easling and his wife Gail. David has 10 children and the youngest is now a senior in high school.
I then went back to Tate’s house where Roger Sample came and spent the night. I had a wonderful time hooking up with my brothers!

  15. Larry Zimmerman: Welcome back to Charlie Company. When were you there?
Hit the contact button at the top and give your contact information to the site administrator. Also, get the password to the roster found within the members button and see if there’s anyone you know.

  16. ben` –i will always remember kham duc–A-105–for its jungle beauty..to the best of my knowledge–most MIA`S from there have been recovered. did you hear about ngog tavak while there ? it was a former jarhead arty place, along with some ARVINS. the village of K.D. had electricity back in the 90s-which sure surprised me. but we also had graves registration people in and out of there over the years–and had to pay to go out there. back in the 90s the ROAD OUT THERE was a mess. bet it would cost a small fortune to get a fly-over of the place–if even allowed. we were up on hill 452 in1970–Dco. was at ta small hill at other end of airstrip.enjoy the trip

    1. Larry:
I have you down as on the June, 1969 roster. I have been trying to locate you for awhile. contact me at larryharper@centurytel.net. I hate the word game at the end, but spammers get on the site and put a lot of crap on the message board

  17. Ben: This was posted on the 196th website:
I learned this morning that Jim Craig, B 3/21, died on top LZ Mary Ann yesterday. He was with a group that was making a return visit. According to Sgt. Cau (interpreter A 3/21 and S2 & S5 2/1), the cause was an apparent heart attack.
    Was this your group?

    1. We all vowed not to say a word for the sake of the family and the tour company and our loved ones at home. Family has been notified and funeral planned in Colorado, Wed. I DO NOT need my Marilyn at home to hear of this until I tell her about it when I am home safe and sound. As of this moment we don’t know how or when we go home.

  18. Just got off the phone with airlines and hotel and made reservations for arrival Sep 18 and depart on Sep 23.
Terry, I used my $150 travel voucher so I didn’t let that go to waste. See you guys in Rapid City.

  19. Hey Ben,
When you were at LZ Mary Ann you were only 7 miles from LZ Judy. Did any discussion come up about the Chinook shot down on Aug 26, 1970?
    Walt and Bill,
Did you guys have to get your snow shovels out?

  20. Today was FSB Mary Ann. We had 6 veterans that had served there-none on that fateful night in 1971. Gary Noller is with us and he left the day before to go to Mellon and listened to the whole thing on the radio.

  21. Today was Kham Duc, about 100 miles from here, the road was decent. Still took over 2 hours. Beautiful scenery, steep mountains and deep gorges. A lot of the trip was part of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. There is a village out there now with electricity-cell phone service-TV. Lot of shops. Ate lunch there. Went to the end of the runway where Charlie Company was stationed. Sad to know there are still Americans out there.

  22. Yesterdays post did not show up so will try again.
Lt: 2 more days here and we go to Hue and then Saigon.
Hawk Hill: We just pulled off Hwy 1 and ran into a cleaning detail, they would not let us proceed or take pictures. I saw the main gate-it has been moved and I have seen other pictures of it from trips past.
Hill 251: Locals say there were VC tunnels under us. Surprise-there was a NVA clinic underground on an adjacent hill.
Pineapple Forest: Got off the bus almost at the exact spot where 3rd Platoon was ambushed on Jan 9,1970. Found the cemetery where Paul Rosteck and I sought cover the first day. Found the bomb crater Ty Harper and I huddled in for a pow-wow while under fire. Did not find exact spot where Jake and Arky were killed, but walked around the area. Some of the bomb craters are still there-they are using them for trash pits.

  23. Hi Chris
I was in C Company, 2nd Battalion of the 1st Infantry from 9/65 to 4/66.
There were actually several “C Companies” in the 196th Light Infantry Brigade: C 2/1. C 3/21, C 4/31 plus C Battery 182 Artillery and even a few more.
I have “yearbooks” covering the first two years of the brigade and I went through them after I saw your post, looking for a combination of the names your father remembers. I looked at all the names in the brigade with special concentration on the C companies.
Unfortunately, I didn’t find any of the names, let alone together in one company. Nor do they appear in the Honor Roll.
These books cover the brigade from its inception up to about July, 1967; this includes all the training in Massachusetts and New York, the boat trips to Vietnam, Tay Ninh and Chu Lai.
If you have additional information, I would be happy to keep looking
